Kalvin Young’s Story

For three years, Kalvin Young, an active resident of Powassan and Nipissing Townships, suffered strange symptoms. Undergoing two MRIs out of town, Kalvin was finally diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

In total, Kalvin underwent six MRIs in Timmins, Sudbury and Toronto, with appointment times at any hour of the day, including 4:00 am. Unable to drive great distances, Kalvin relied on friends and family to make his appointments. Although travel grants are available, they do not cover the immense expense accumulated during these frequent trips.

Kalvin requires annual MRIs to monitor the progression of his disease. Your support made the purchase of a MRI for the North Bay Regional Health Centre possible.

I have Multiple Sclerosis and previously had to travel four hours for my MRI scans. That’s hard enough for a healthy person, let alone someone living with a chronic disease. I will need more MRIs as my disease progresses. Thanks to you, I can have them close to home!

Thanks to your support, the community raised over $6 million towards state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging equipment through Seeing More Clearly: A campaign for an MRI and more. Not only did community support ensure the new Health Centre was equipped with an MRI, you also ensured area residents have access to digital mammography, X-ray, fluoroscopy and angiography equipment as well as a SPECT/CT for nuclear medicine. Our district now has access to leading-edge diagnostic care.

The impact of your support is felt daily by patients of the Health Centre. During the past year 6,960 MRIs, 22,395 CT Scans, and 52,585 Radiology Exams were performed at NBRHC. Without your support, this would not have been possible.
