Brian Couchie, along with friends and family, hosted the Anita Couchie Memorial Charity Golf Tournament May 29, 2026 at Osprey Links Golf course. Generous sponsors, golfers and donors helped raise more than $10,000 supporting cancer care for our community at North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC). Over the past four years, more than $57,000 has been raised through this tournament.

“On New Year’s Eve in 2013, my wife Anita, was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. It is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. It was painful. While fighting this disease, Anita never complained. The nurses and support staff in the Chemotherapy Unit did an excellent job of making it as pleasant as possible. I wanted to do this tournament in my great appreciation to the nurses and staff working in cancer care at North Bay Regional Health Centre,” said Couchie.

Each year, more than 1,200 people in our area are diagnosed with cancer. The journey for many patients is difficult and challenging. Early diagnosis and treatment are important. NBRHC plays an important role in the care of patients with cancer, providing screening, diagnoses, treatment and support for patients with cancer, close to home. This included lab tests, diagnostic scans, chemotherapy, surgery, pain management, rehabilitation and end of life care.

This year’s Anita Couchie Memorial Charity Golf Tournament proceeds will be supporting an additional ultrasound machine that will be used in diagnosing breast cancer. This will increase NBRHC’s fleet from 5 to 6 ultrasounds, better support radiologist capacity, and reduce the time between abnormal mammogram screening and definitive diagnosis.

State-of-the-art medical equipment is made possible through the strength of the partnership between the government, hospital and our community. Every year, businesses, individuals, families, and groups donate in many ways: through monthly and memorial gifts, contributions in Wills, corporate sponsorships, and multi-year commitments. Together, donations large and small are making a meaningful difference – supporting exceptional healthcare, close to home.

“We are grateful to Brian, the golfers and sponsors that made this tournament a success. We are also pleased to share that proceeds from this year’s tournament will be part of helping our community toward achieving a 2:1 matching gift from FDC Foundation, tripling the impact of our community’s generosity,” shared Tammy Morison, President & CEO, NBRHC Foundation.
