āRheal was the heart of our family. Honouring his memory helps carry his love forward in our lives and our community.”
– Marcelle Beaulieu
A Letter from Marcelle Beaulieu:
Sharing the story of her husband, Rheal.
Iām honoured to share the story of my husband and lifelong partner, Rhealāthe man who filled my life with love, laughter, and unwavering support. He was known for his kindness, his steady presence, and the deep devotion he had for his family and community.
Rheal was truly the love of my life- my constant companion, my greatest support, and the heart of our family. We shared a strong faith in the Catholic Church and were devoted supporters at our Parish Church of St. Peter the Apostle.
We met in high school. I was a country girl from Grand Desert. He was the handsome boy with a curl falling across his forehead and a ālookā that made my heart skip a beat. By the time we reached Grade 10, we were exchanging love notes. Even though I lived 12 miles away on a farm, he would walk or jog all that way just to spend a few hours with me. My siblings kept a close eye on us around the kitchen table, but from the start, we were soulmates.
We were married for 57 years. Through job transfers, raising our children, and all of lifeās ups and downs, Rheal was my partner in everything. Rheal worked in banking, and we moved 14 times in 25 years. He loved to build and renovate. I used to tease him that every transfer came with a construction project.
He was kind, compassionate, and always looking out for others. He helped his customers not just with finances, but also as a friend. Through his involvement with the Richelieu Club in Timmins and North Bay, he generously gave his time, raising funds for childrenās causes.
At home, Rhealās love ran just as deep. He was devoted to our three children, Mike, Monique and Nicole, as well as our grandchildren, Patrick, Cameron, Jamil and Yasmine. Even his āgrand-catsā held a special place in his heart. Iāll never forget the joy on his face, cuddling the two tiny kittens our daughter brought home.
We did everything together – golfed, travelled coast to coast, and even baked. We made 20 pies for Christmas one year! In 2001, we settled in North Bay to be closer to family. He built a flower bed across the front of the houseāI can remember him laying on the lawn with a level to make sure it was perfect! Thatās how he got to know our neighbours.
In 2023, Rhealās health began to decline. After a stroke, I could no longer care for him safely at home on my own. The North Bay Regional Health Centre became our second home. I visited twice a day and when I couldnāt be there, our daughter Nicole was. Those days were long and hard. The support we received made such a difference.
Dr. Rotondo visited Rheal every morning, keeping us well informed. The nurses and PSWs showed kindness, compassion, and calm throughout his care. There were moments that were difficult and confusing. Iāll never forget the day his oxygen levels suddenly dropped. The staff acted fast and rushed him to CCU. It was overwhelming.
On June 16, 2023, Rheal passed away peacefully, while our daughter Nicole held one of his hands and I held the other. He left this world quietly, surrounded by love.
In the days that followed, our family searched for a way to honour Rhealās memory, something lasting, something meaningful.
When we learned about the Foundationās Celebrating Life Memorial Wall, it truly spoke to our hearts. It felt like a beautiful and fitting tribute to Rheal – one that allowed us to give back while creating a lasting reminder of the love, care, and compassion we experienced during his time at the hospital.
Itās more than just a name on a wall. Itās a reflection of who he was- his humour, his deep love for family, his kindness, and a way for us to honour his memory.
Reaching a $2,000 cumulative memorial donation threshold added Rhealās name to the Celebrating Life Memorial Wall, a lasting symbol of love and gratitude. This threshold can be done at once or over time (monthly or yearly).
If you are interested in topping up the donations in memory of your loved one for the annual memorial reception this fall, I encourage you to connect with my friends at the Foundation.
Knowing that Rhealās memory is helping others brings me comfort.
Because of the care at NBRHC, I was able to be with Rheal every single day. I could hold his hand, speak with his doctors, and walk beside him until the very endāall without leaving our community. Your gift helps make that possible for others.
With heartfelt thanks,
Marcelle.
P.S. Every time I return home after being away, I feel Rhealās presence waiting for me. I will continue to honour his memory and keep giving in his name.
The Foundation is hosting its annual memorial reception in early October to acknowledge and remember those who are listed on the Celebrating Life Memorial Wall.
