Community Raises $128,300 Supporting Urgently Needed Advanced Medical Equipment.

Sep 25, 2023 | Press Release

North Bay, ON – The 17th annual Our Hospital Walk/Run had just over 547 participants and volunteers and raised more than $128,300 on Sunday morning. Proceeds from this year’s Walk/Run are supporting our community’s highest priority medical equipment needs.

Former patient Janis Reid shared her experience from last Fall. “I was in the unfortunate position of needing emergency care twice. The second visit having been life changing for me. While helping my husband prune a branch off one of our mature White Pines, a large branch fell just as I was looking up and struck me in the eye. My glasses bounced off my head and blood started to spurt from my eye. It was frightening, and we rushed to NBRHC, a 30-minute drive away,” said Reid.

Upon their arrival, Emergency nurses and physicians responded promptly. Dr. Ellies was summoned as the ophthalmologist on call and ordered an ultrasound. Janis was then taken for a CT scan. Dr. Ellies removed eight pieces of bark from her eye, glued a small tear on the upper lid, examined a cut on the outer corner, and examined the conjunctiva.

“Dr. Ellies’ caring, positive, calming, compassionate, and professional manner left me feeling optimistic about a good outcome. Throughout the entire experience, she was able to keep me calm and reassured, even when she had to do something that brought me more pain. I felt valued and like the treatment and outcome of my injury was important to everyone,” shared Janis.

“We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of sponsors and pledgers, along with participants and volunteers,” said Tammy Morison, Foundation President and CEO.  “Our Hospital Walk/Run is the community’s largest annual fundraiser for our Health Centre and has an impact its ability to provide exceptional care, close to home. Special thanks to all who helped make Our Hospital Walk/Run a success again this year.”
